V.3 - New Worlds, Collectable Coins, Art Updates

Every three months, Free Kick Underground gets a release. This third release had some cool stuff including new content, collectables, and art.

Background Graphics:

The game had pretty minimal background art before and on this release I wanted to finally update it. The first step was learning how to add animated tiles,  then a lot of drawing and experimenting to create some layers and elements for the background, and  lastly added some particle effects to simulate wind/dust to give some more movement and detail.

Collectable Coins

To add some more challenges and replay-ability to the levels, I added a silver and gold coin that can be collected for each. These are more difficult shots to make, but the silver coins can also sometimes act as a hint on how to angle your shot towards the goal. You can see all the coins you collected in the level overview screens.

New World and 15 Levels

With 30 levels built in the blue brick sewer setting, I wanted the next set of levels to look and feel different. I had a green underground temple setting in my mind so I began designing the tileset for what that world environment might look like. This also involved a lot experimentation and colour-palette swapping. The main gameplay difference for these levels is the goal being open at the top instead of the side, making them more difficult to aim the ball into.
